MPT Chairman P Mara Pandiyan told PTI that the order issued yesterday suspending the operations at the port was illogical.

"The inspection team of the GSPCB never recommended the closure. We are surprised by the order. (What) the inspection recommended (was) that certain steps should be taken to control the pollution," he said.

The GSPCB had issued the closure notice as it found that pollution levels in the port town are going up due to coal handling activities at two berths of MPT.

The board had withdrawn the consent to two berths under Air and Water Pollution Control Act.

Pandiyan said that the MPT was ready to implement all measures to ensure that the pollution is under check.

"We will rectify whatever are the shortcomings. The MPT has decided to urge the GSPCB to withdraw the order. We will request the Board to call back the order and if they don't do it, we will have to take judicial recourse," he added.
