"Slow progress of work slackens economic development. Completion of work within the stipulated time will not only prevent escalation of costs but also help accelerate the pace of economic development," Gogoi said at a review meeting of works under Public Works, Building and National Highway Department and NHAI here.
The department should start an incentive scheme to stakeholders carrying out timely execution of works and punish parties failing to complete projects.
"Those who can complete the works before the scheduled timeframe must be awarded incentives. There should not be any excuses for failing to complete the works. Only genuine cases should be considered," he said.
"Since Day one, our government has been according top priority to development of roads and bridges which is so vital for the state's economic development," he said.
Gogoi said improvement in communication in backward areas have also helped to contain insurgency as it has led to economic resurgence in rural as well as backward areas.
He also called upon NHAI officials to expedite the completion of the East-West Corridor.
