"Conflict cannot solve any problem. The present age is one of peaceful co-existence and we should be tolerant of each other so that we can live together and climb the ladder of progress," he told the 72nd conference of Asom Sahitya Sabha near here.
Describing Assam as "a garden of flowers of myriad colours and hues", he said, its society is incomplete without its various tribes and linguistic groups.
"As migration is a universal phenomenon, those who come to Assam and adopt its language, culture and tradition should be treated as Assamese."
Lauding the role of Asom Sahitya Sabha, he said the literary and cultural body should do more to attract the new generation.
"The power of literature is strong and it influences the people a lot. Literature has a role to play in elimination of insurgency, alleviation of poverty, removing injustice and even educating people about global warming and climate change" Gogoi said.
Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary lauded the role of the Sabha and requested it to guide and encourage the state's various indigenous literary and cultural organisations.
Veteran Gujarati writer Shitangshu Jashachandra said though the distance between the various corners of India is vast yet all of them are emotionally bound together.
