Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed the authorities concerned to take up immediate measures to stop erosion of Brahmaputra river banks at Nematighat and Majuli, the world's largest river island.
Gogoi, accompanied by Water Resources Minister Rajiv Lochan Pegu, today visited erosion-affected Nematighat from where ferries to Majuli leave and arrive to take stock of the rapid erosion.
The Chief Minister directed Jorhat Deputy Commissioner to monitor the situation and give details about the anti-erosion measures taken by the departments concerned in Nematighat and Halmora in northern Majuli from area where hundreds of people travel to and fro every day.
Recently huge portions of land on the river bank were washed away by Brahmpautra, including a 500-metre-long black- topped road, a rest house, over 35 shops and some anti-erosion materials like culverts, iron pillars, stones, boulders and the loss was estimated to be more than Rupees one crore.
After inspecting the erosion-affected Nematighat, the Chief Minister attended a high-level review meeting with senior officials from Brahamaputra Board and Water Resource Department here.
