Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed officials to accelerate efforts for skill development to minimise the gap of demand and supply in the employment generation sector.
The Chief Minister, in a meeting today with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) Chairman S Ramadorai, emphasised the need for increased effort by the government departments in meaningful income generating employment of local youths.
He also sought cooperation from the National Skill Development Corporation to help in generating skills in the local youths to increase their employability.
As per census 2011, Assam has 3.11 crore population of which 85 per cent live in semi urban and rural areas. Considering the huge concentration of people in rural and semi urban areas, need for skill development to create a pool of human resources remains a pertinent point which needs to be addressed immediately, Gogoi added.
Ramadorai said a synergistic approach involving all employment and skill generating agencies was required to tap the energy of the youth and channelise it into income generating vocations.
Assam Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla gave an overview of the efforts of different departments engaged in skill and employment generation.
He also reiterated that the State Employment Generation Mission and NSDC should work together to bring in new perspective and technology to bolster the sectors like handloom and textile, tourism, agriculture and horticulture.
