Assam today joined the rest of the country in celebrating the birth day of Jawaharlal Nehru as 'Children's Day' when Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called upon the children to emulate the ideals of the first Prime Minister.
Attending a programme organised by the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan here, Gogoi called upon the children to emulate the ideals of Nehru.
Terming Nehru as a symbol of integration, Gogoi said the first premier fought against British Imperialism and laid the foundation of a modern India with pluralism and diversity as the hallmarks of the country.
The chief minister also interacted with the children and distributed confectionaries among them.
The attraction of the day was cultural performance staged by the children of Sishu Sarathi and others which enthralled everybody present in the programme.
Gogoi also felicitated nine students for their achievements in different disciplines at national and international events.
