"The overall law and order situation in the state has improved following laying down of arms and coming forward for peace talks by major militant outfits resulting in steep fall in civilian killings", Gogoi told a two-day review meeting with deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of the state beginning here today.

"But incidents of kidnapping for ransom, extortions, woman and child trafficking have gone up and these are serious concerns that need to be tackled by the police administration with a firm hand", he said.

The deputy commissioners and superintendents of police must be more responsive towards the needs of the people and they should make more field visits to feel the pulse of the people, he said.

"As leaders of the district, the DCs and SPs must address the genuine problems of the people and implement the policies of the government at the grass root level. They can change the

face of the districts by ushering in development and ensuring law and order", he said.

Gogoi said that the government would introduce a grading system based on the performance of the DCs and SPs and the best performing districts would be awarded with incentives. PTI DG PR
