Kurien, born in Kozhikode, Kerala, on November 26, 1921, transformed India from a milk-deficient country to the world's largest milk producer. The founder of Amul passed away on September 9, 2012 after a brief illness.

Since last year, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has asked state dairy unions and federations to commemorate Kurien's birth anniversary as 'National Milk Day' to create awareness about dairy sector.
(GCMMF), which sells milk under the brand 'Amul', celebrated November 26, Kurien's birthday, as National Milk Day.
On this occasion, GCMMF MD RS Sodhi expressed his respect towards Verghese Kurien.
"The vision and commitment of Dr Kurien has helped in socio-economic development of millions of rural milk producers," he said in a statement.
