Meghalaya Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi today said he is examining a petition made by the All Regional Party Alliance to return to power at the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, a day after the cabinet recommended administrator's rule in the council.
"I have seen a petition received from a group. I will examine it before taking a call," Tripathy told reporters after meeting ARPA leader Metbah Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh led a delegation of his supporters consisting of 16 members of the district council claiming he has the majority to form the executive committee in the House of 30.
Last evening, District Council Affairs Minister H D R Lyngdoh said the government has recommended Administrator rule in the council here for a period of six months in view of the prevailing political situation in the council, one of the three autonomous district councils in the state.
In its recommendation, the government said two MDCs shifted their allegiance from one alliance to another within the same day thereby making the political situation in KHADC 'very fluid'.
It added that under the present situation, convening of the session of the council for taking the vote of confidence on the present EC when the CEM has not resigned to pave way for election of a new CEM will lead to more confusion and may even encourage horse trading.
The KHADC has had two chief executives in a period of one year after the elections were held in February last year.
Ardent M Basaiawmoit executive committee lasted for six months before the present CEM Adelbert Nongrum took over.
