Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju conceded in the Lok Sabha that the minimum buffer zone around ammunition depots was getting compromised as people tend to overlook safety factors.
"If we have more cooperation from public representatives, officials and civic bodies we can ensure that the guidelines issued under the Works of Defence Act were strictly adhered to," Raju said during Question Hour.
To a specific question on the Air Force Ammunition Depot at Gurgaon, he said there was no plan to relocate it.
The Ministry of Defence had revised the guidelines under the Works of Defence Act (1903) in 2007 and depending on the type of installation, restrictions ranging from 100 meters to 900 meters were imposed.
"However, in view of the presence of ammunition stores, even under the revised instructions, the limits are not changed," Raju said.
