The opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) members raised the issue during question hour and urged the government to take up with the Centre to declare the problem as a national calamity which has been a longstanding demand of the people of the state.
Raising the issue, AGP's Phani Bhusan Choudhury, Keshav Mahanta and Padma Hazarika as well as AIUDF's M Hussain said this year the flood has been unprecedented and has brought untold suffering to the people in various parts of the state.
The opposition pressed for moving a resolution but Water Resource Minister Prithvi Majhi intervened saying the government on its part will move the same probably in tommorow's session.
Admitting that the flood has been unprecedented this year, the minister said all steps have been taken to mitigate the suffering of the people.
"The flood problem has been aggravated as the river bed of Brahmaputra has become shallow and water from neighbouring states were pouring in. We have to take long term steps to contain the problem", he said.
More than 125 people have been killed in the first wave of flood hitting the state this year while infrastructure have been widely affected.
