Govt aims to transform India into a software product nation

Government is aiming to transform the country into a software making hub where the over USD 100 billion domestic IT services industry will work on products 'Made-in-India'.
"Minister (Ravi Shankar Prasad) will hold IT Panchayat tomorrow in Bangalore in collaboration with industry body NASSCOM and other key associations. He will talk to them to make India a software product nation," a Ministry of Communications and IT official told PTI.
The IT and Business Process Management (IT-BPM) industry in India garnered revenues of around USD 109 billion in 2012-13 whereas IT product revenue stood at USD 2.2 billion, of which 30 per cent came from the domestic market.
IT industry body NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies) has set a target to increase revenue from software products by about five-fold to USD 10 billion by 2020.
The interface or operating system of all computers and mobile phones used in the country are built on products of foreign IT giants like Microsoft, Google or Apple.
"Minister will meet start-ups who have been great contributors to the development of software products. At a time when budget is being prepared, objective of this meet to understand constraints and their needs to enhance product development here," the official said.
The Minister will also discuss on the enhancement of use of IT in domestic electronics manufacturing.
"Government wants to push interest among investors for producing software in India. The Minister will also discuss on enhancing use and upgradation of technology to improve governance," the official said.
