Delhi Government has decided to replace brown jeeps plying under Phat Phat Sewa, which have completed 15 years, with new ones having seating capacity of seven to twelve passengers.
Transport Department has asked owners of such jeeps plying under this scheme in the national Capital to surrender their vehicles.
"The scheme is allowed for replacement only for new four wheeled motor vehicles, with seating capacity of seven to twelve passengers excluding the driver. The vehicles under this scheme will operate as ordinary transport vehicle on contract carriage permits (without fare meter). The owners of these jeeps having permits will not need new permit to run the vehicle," said a senior official of transport department.
These jeeps have been operating in the city since 1998, when they replaced three-wheelers for Phat Phat Sewa.
At present, around 375 jeeps are running in the city and most of them have completed 15 years.
"The vehicle will not have a height more than 2.5 meters and standing of passengers shall not be allowed," the official said.
He also said that new vehicles under this scheme should have GPS/GPRS device from empanelled vendors authorised by the transport department through DIMTS.
