"This is a betrayal of pensioners by the Government and it is going back on its electoral promise. We support the pensioners and demand the government to stop humiliation of the pensioners, who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. The pensioners returning medals explain the extent of their betrayal," CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat said.
CPI national secretary D Raja reminded the Prime Minister of announcing the himself and insisted the Government to tell people how the scheme will be implemented.
Ex-servicemen from parts of the country, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Moga, Jalandhar, and Gurdaspur, began returning their medals to district collectors/government offices intensifying their protest against the OROP notification, saying that it was "unacceptable" to them.
Veterans from Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara and Bangalore will also follow the suit "next", the protesters informed.
More than 20,000 veterans have returned their medals until now ever since the protests began in 2008, the veterans claimed.
