According to senior officials, the government is mulling the contours of such a contest, which would factor in the facilities and advantages that a city or region can provide to decide where a new institute will come up.
The setting up of a new institute especially premier ones like IIMs, IITs or NITs, etc are considered a matter of prestige and the HRD ministry has often received demand from various quarters for setting up of new institutions.
However, officials also said that it has to be ensured that the guidelines for such a contest are judicious so that it results in putting different regions on the educational map of the country.
Earlier, the Urban Development ministry under its 'Smart City' scheme had held a contest after which it chose the top cities for the scheme.
