Punjab government is planning to supply, biscuits, snacks and artifacts made by inmates of Central Jail in Ludhiana to government educational institutes and universities across the state.
Sohan Singh Thandal, Jails Minister, Punjab said this during his visit to the Central Jail, Ludhiana along with Additional Director General Police (Jails) Rajpal Meena.
At Central Jail Ludhiana alone, inmates prepare one quintal of biscuits of five varieties and more than 50 kg of namkeen (snack) everyday in a bakery unit, established by the Jail Department with the cost of Rs 25 lakh, Thandal said.
He said the technical training to the inmates was provided by the experts of a private university in Jalandhar.
The minister said the inmates, who have undergone a month-long training in the bakery production, further impart this skill to other inmates.
The bakery products prepared in this jail bakery are then further supplied to the other jails across the state, he said.
As demand for the jail projects is increasing, the Jail Department has been mulling the idea to supply the jail products to government educational institutes, offices and universities.
Senior officers have already been instructed to prepare a comprehensive plan in this regard.
