With state police arresting three men and seizing explosives, Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan today accused the BJP-led government in the state of not taking timely action against extremist groups.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad yesterday seized a huge quantity of explosives and arrested Vaibhav Raut, Sharad Kalaskar and Sudhanva Gondhalekar. Raut allegedly ran a pro-cow protection outfit, and the trio were planning to carry out blasts, the ATS said.

Chavan today alleged that the trio belonged to two right-wing organisations operating in Maharashtra.

"The government has knowingly avoided taking action against these extremist organisations, which has led to spread of the poison of extremism in the state," Chavan said in a statement.

Alleging that the BJP-led government was shielding the heads of these organisations, he said, "Instead of thinking of political implications, the government should finish this extremist poison.
