The Centre today sought nominations from eligible candidates to fill vacant positions of Information Commissioners in Central Information Commission (CIC).
At present, there are eight members working in the Commission besides Chief Information Commissioner Sushma Singh.
The Commission shall have a Chief Information Commissioner and up to 10 Information Commissioners, according to the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
It is proposed to appoint more Information Commissioners in the Commission. The RTI Act provides that the Information Commissioners shall be persons of eminence in public life with wide knowledge and experience in law, science and technology, social service, management, journalism, mass-media or administration and governance, said an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
The Information Commissioner shall not be a Member of Parliament or Member of the Legislature of any state or Union Territory, or hold any other office of profit or connected with any political party or carrying on any business or pursuing any profession.
An Information Commissioner shall hold office for a term of five years from the date on which he or she enters upon office or till he or she attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
"The salary and allowances payable to an Information Commissioner shall be the same as that of an Election Commissioner," it said.
The last date for sending applications by eligible candidates to the DoPT is March 25.
