The MET department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall over the next three days and officials have been asked to keep vigil on the situation, Bhuniya said after reviewing the situation at a meeting with officials.
Water levels in the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka and Sankosh rivers in north Bengal and in the Ganga, Bhagirathi and Damodar in Malda and Murshidabad in south Bengal were being monitored, he said.
He said the Damodar Valley Corporation had been asked to release water from its dams in consultation with West Bengal government and with prior notice so that there was enough time to relocate villagers in low-lying areas.
The state government was also in touch with neighbouring Jharkhand and Odisha governments regarding sudden spate in rivers flowing from those states, he said.
He said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had asked him to take all precautionary measures to ensure safety of life and property.
A control room has been opened at the state secretariat to monitor the situation.
