Tightening the import norms for pepper, the government today said inbound shipments of pepper over and above Rs 500 per kilogram is free and below that value it is prohibited.
"Import of pepper over and above CIF (cost, insurance and freight) Rs 500 per kilogram is free and import below CIF Rs 500 is prohibited," the directorate general of foreign trade said in a notification.
Concerned over a sharp drop in domestic pepper prices, the Centre today imposed a minimum import price on the commodity at Rs 500 per kg to shield domestic growers.
Karnataka and Kerala are the leading pepper producing states in the country.
