The state government would make the necessary amendments possible at its level to make tougher laws pertaining to heinous crimes and would pursue the case of other amendments with the Union government wherever their intervention was required, he told reporters here.

These amendments would be helpful in checking the criminal activities targeting women and provide a congenial atmosphere to the residents of the state, Badal said.

Badal said the state government was following a policy of 'zero tolerance' against crime and criminals.

The state government or Shiromani Akali Dal was not shielding the criminals in any way, he said

Coming down heavily on the Congress leadership, Badal said the opposition party was "envious" of the development work being carried out in the state, therefore was trying to mislead people by issuing "baseless" statements regarding law and order situation.

The SAD-BJP government was vigilantly monitoring the law and order situation to check the crime, he said adding, the sporadic incidents of crime were in fact a reflection of the "declining morality" in the society.

He, however, said that even advanced nations like the US witnessed incidents of crime like that of Wisconsin shoot out, where innocent Sikhs were killed, but that did not anyway attribute to the deterioration of law and order situation.
