Govt to double BVFCL urea capacity; establish NIPER in Assam

The government will double the capacity of Brahmaputra Fertilizers plant to 8 lakh tonnes per annum, and establish the pharma research institute NIPER in next 3 years in the state, Fertiliser Minister Ananth Kumar said today.
Speaking at the inauguration of Rs 10,000 crore Brahmputra Cracker and Polymer Ltd project, Kumar said this project is a step towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream of Make in India.
"1 lakh tonnes polymer required for the state, and this project will produce 3 lakh tonnes of polymers per annum, which will incentives the thousands of ancillary industries and would provide direct and indirect employment at least one lakh people in the state," he said at the event.
Kumar added that this project has been delayed for last three decades, while during the Modi led government it was expedited and completed to fulfill the longstanding demand of the Assam.
He also informed that the annual intake capacity of Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) will be increased to 5,000 students per annum from 1,000 at present.
"..So now with establishment of this polymer project there will be requirement of human resource in the state for plastic industry, so capacity of CIPET will be increase to 5,000 students per year, as part of skill India," he added.
Sharing various initiatives that the Centre has taken for the state, Kumar said government has already announced to expand the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Ltd (BVFCL) plant at Namrup.

"The fertiliser plant in Namrup is producing 3.5 lakh tonnes of urea per annum, while the demand of entire north- eastern region is 8 lakh tonnes, I am assuring you this will be more than doubled to 8 lakh tonnes per annum in next three years," he said.
Kumar said that under the Skill India plan of the Modi government, the pharma research institute National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) would also be set up in the next three years.
"The NIPER in Guwahati would be completed in next three years," he added.
