For better transparency in employment guarantee schemes under MNREGS, the government will complete geotagging of nearly 3 crore assets created under the programme so far, by March next year.
"It is expected that the exercise will lead to greater transparency and ensure accountability at field level. And we are working on geotagging all assets created under MNREGS by March next year," Rural Development Secretary Amarjeet Sinha said.
About one crore assets created under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) have been geotagged and put in the public domain, the ministry said in a statement.
Since its inception in the year 2006-07, about 2.82 crore assets have been created under the scheme.
On an average, about 30 lakh assets are created annually which includes a variety of works such as water harvesting structures, plantations, rural infrastructure, flood control measures, individual assets for sustainable livelihood, community infrastructure and others.
Special focus is being given to geotagging Natural Resource Management works especially the water-related works, it added.
For geotagging of assets, rural development ministry has started a project GeoMGNREGA, in association with National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO and National Informatics Centre.
For this task, training was imparted to around 2.76 lakh personnel across the country with the help of National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRD&PR).
