Concluding a discussion under Rule 58 in the assembly on the atrocities occurring in the state in the name of moral policing, Radhakrishnan said it was in effect a challenge to the rights of citizens in a democracy and the government would not tolerate such activities.

Seeking the co-operation and support of opposition parties in checking the moral police activities, Radhakrishnan said politics should not be mixed with such incidents.

"If politics is combined with it, the real culprits behind such crimes would escape', the minister said.

The notice for the discussion was given by CPI-M Deputy Leader in the House and former Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in the wake of reports of incidents of moral policing in several part of the state.

Referring to the murder of an ABVP activist, allegedly by volunteers of Campus Front, student wing of National Development Front (NDF) at Cheganoor on Tuesday, the minister said few persons had been arrested in connection with the killing.

"Government will not only arrest the persons who committed the attack, but also the brain behind it', Radhakrishnan said.

Initiating the debate, A K Balan (CPI-M), said things have become so worse in the state that it has even become difficult to go out with wife without marriage certificate. "Writing a love letter has also become an offence in the state", he said and wanted the government to clamp down such offences with an iron hand.
