Announcing this here today, the state Youth Welfare Minister Arup Biswas said such a step was taken for the first time to bring in educational institutions in the list of recipients.
Biswas said his department has sanctioned Rs 5,000 each to 9,631 secondary and higher secondary schools, Rs 10,000 each to 499 colleges and Rs 25,000 each to 11 Universities in the state under this scheme.
The educational institutions in the districts would get the grant through district magistrates, while for such institutions in Kolkata, grants would be disbursed through the Education Department, the minister said.
Besides, Siliguri, Asansol, Durgapur, Chadernagore and Howrah corporations were also sanctioned a grant of Rs five lakh each and Rs two lakh each to 15 boroughs of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, said Biswas.
Like the previous year, the Youth Welfare department has handed over cheques of Rs five lakh each to nine mountaineers for an expedition to the Mt Everest this year.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today wished the team success for their expedition, Biswas added.
