Over 50 environmental activists from across the city today took out a "funeral procession of trees" that were hacked by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation recently to pave way for the project.
"In a bid to protest hacking of the trees we held this procession and hope that local and state administration wakes up and stops killing remaining trees, which are more important than Metro rail project," said Mani Gopal, an activist and a tree-lover.
The procession was stopped by the police as it did not have necessary permission.
Another activist who requested anonymity said, "Our purpose of taking out the procession was to pay tribute to the trees that were hacked for the Metro project and it was served."
Earlier on May 24, when several trees were hacked in south Mumbai, two people from Aarey Conservation Group (ACG) climbed on the tree and forced the contractor to stop the hacking.
