Lectures by eminent scientists, quiz competitions for college students, exhibitions, visits to laboratories and meteorite gallery and hands on training in identification of minerals and rocks have been scheduled for the organisation's three-day-long foundation day celebrations that began today.
GSI Director General N Kutumba Rao inaugurated the foundation day celebrations and the exhibitions at the organisation's headquarters here.
Several specially challenged students showcased their talents during today's celebrations which was attended by senior retired officers of the organisation, school and college students.
The GSI was set up in 1851 primarily to find coal deposits for the Railways. Over the years, the organisation has grown into a repository of geo-science information centre required in various fields in the country.
Headquartered in Kolkata, the organisation has regional offices in Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Shillong.
