Gudi Padwa celebrated with traditional fervour in Maharashtra

People in Maharashtra today celebrated with traditional fervour the festival of 'Gudi Padwa' which falls on the first day of Chaitra month marking the beginning of the New Year according to Hindu calendar.
Households across the state witnessed hectic activities, with family members erecting the traditional 'Gudi' -- Bright green or yellow cloth adorned with brocade (zari) tied to the tip of a long bamboo stick over which gaathi (sugar crystals), neem leaves and a twig of mango leaves and a garland of red flowers is tied.
A silver or copper pot is placed in the inverted position over it.

Gudi is believed to ward off evil and ring in prosperity and good luck into the house. It is positioned on the right side of the main entrance of the house.
Sweets like 'Puran Poli' or 'Shrikhand' along with 'Aambe daal' and 'Sunth Paak' are prepared on the day.
The New Year day is also considered auspicious for 'vaastu puja' and for starting of new business.

People dressed in traditional attire took out a procession in different parts of the state to celebrate Gudi Padwa.
Highlight of the procession was a bike rally and playing of drums by traditionally dressed women.

On this day, people buy something valuable including gold since it is considered auspicious. Gudi Padwa also marks the start of the harvest season.
