Congress will stage protests across Gujarat on March 28 demanding rollback of the Centre's "anti-people" decision to slash interest rates on small savings instruments.
"This is a major blow to the middle class which has remained by the side of BJP during all crucial elections in Gujarat as well as in country," said state unit Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki.
The government's move to bring down rates of PPF, Kisan Vikas Patra, National Savings Certificate and related instruments has evoked sharp reactions from many quarters.
"Demanding roll back of rate cuts, we will stage protests across Gujarat on March 28. Our leaders in various districts will also hand over a memorandum to respective collectors to register our strong protest against such anti-people move by the BJP-led central government," Solanki told reporters.
He claimed small savings rates were always raised by the Congress-led UPA government in the past to protect the common man.
On March 18, the Centre slashed interest rates on small savings schemes, including PPF, Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) and senior citizen deposits to make them more market-aligned.
