In the wake of allegations that Gujarat's Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Communications, Vipul Vijoy, had confined 13 policemen inside his bungalow, the state government today asked the senior IPS officer to proceed on leave for indefinite period.
According to police, some policemen made a distress call to the control room late last evening and claimed that Vijoy had confined 13 of them inside a garage of his official bungalow at Karai Police Academy in Gandhinagar.
The officer, however, said that he had only asked the policemen not to leave the place before they complete an official task given to them, which they had failed to carry out in the last six months.
According to the 13 policemen, who include Assistant Sub Inspectors and constables, they had been locked up by the IPS officer at his residence and were forced to sit there for over 12 hours without any food or water.
Later, after learning about the situation from the police control room, some of the top police officials rushed to Vijoy's bungalow and "rescued" the 13 policemen, an official said.
Following the allegations, the Home Department asked Vijoy to go on leave.

"Looking at the current situation and allegations against him, ADGP Vipul Vijoy has been asked to proceed on leave from today. ADGP of Guajrat SC/ST Cell V K Mall will handle the additional charge of Communication department till further orders," a top Gujarat Home Department official said.
However, Vijoy later told mediapersons that he has not done anything wrong. He claimed that he had only asked 13 of his staff members not to leave his residence till the task assigned to them got over.
"They are the men in uniform. They should be ready to work 24 hours. I had given them a task to establish internet connectivity in all police stations in Botad district. But, they have not finished it in the last six months. So, I called them at my residence to finish that work.
"I asked them to finish the work from there and asked them not to leave till it was done. I have not confined them. The garage in my house does not have doors. I also gave them all the facilities. I don't know why they are making such allegations," Vijoy said.
However, before going on leave this evening, Vijoy suspended a PSI and one clerk from his office. The PSI and clerk had reportedly made calls to police control room to inform about their ordeal.
But Mall, who took the charge, has decided to cancel Vijoy's order. "The suspension order was passed against two of our employees -- a PSI and a clerk. I have scrapped that order. The order will not be implemented," said Mall.
