With the Supreme Court coming down heavily on Gujarat for not implementing National Food Security Act, Congress leader Ahmed Patel today said it was a "sad day" for the state.
"It's a sad day for Gujarat. State govt's repeated failure to implement Food Security Act has finally forced the Supreme Court to intervene" Patel, who is a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, said in a series of tweets.
"This delay has denied the poor their rights. I wrote to the CM 7 months ago & have not received any reply," he lamented.
In an apparent dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the Chief Minister of the state earlier for 12 years, he remarked "the state govt which once advertised its efficiency as #GujaratModel has no explanation as to why it is delaying the rollout of NFSA".
The Supreme Court had today wondered why a state like Gujarat is not implementing the law passed by Parliament. It also came down heavily on certain other states for not implementing the welfare legislation.
"What is Parliament doing? Is Gujarat not a part of India? The Act says it extends to whole of India and Gujarat is not implementing it. Tomorrow somebody can say that it is not going to implement the CrPC, IPC and the Evidence Act," a bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur said.
The bench was hearing a PIL which alleged that parts of states like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Haryana and Chattisgarh have been hit by drought and the authorities were not providing adequate relief.
