To draw attention to illegal sand mining in Jamnagar district, a man today consumed sleeping pills outside the office of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar.
Gokul Varu, resident of Jamnagar, was admitted to the civil hospital after he told the staff of Chief Minister's Office that he had swallowed sleeping pills.
The CMO is on the fourth floor of Swarnim Sankul-1 complex inside the Sachivalaya (secretariat). Rupani was in Ahmedabad when the incident took place.
Varu, resident of Mavapara in Dhrol tehsil of Jamnagar, arrived at the Sachivalaya at around 4.30 pm.
Gandhinagar district superintendent of police Virendrasinh Yadav said that Varu had consumed five pills.
"Varu told one of the peons at CMO that he had consumed five anti-depressant sleeping pills. He was rushed to the hospital. Doctors told us that pills had had no effect. He will be discharged soon," Yadav told PTI.

"Upon questioning, Varu claimed that he wanted to draw government's attention to illegal sand mining in Dhrol tehsil....We found that he had been detained two days ago in Jamnagar for threatening the authorities over the same issue," the SP said, adding that no police case had been lodged yet.
Varu told reporters that he wanted to highlight the inaction of local authorities.
"Illegal sand mining is rampant in Dhrol and Jodiya tehsils. Despite several representations, authorities have not taken any action. That is why I took this step," he said.
