Acting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's suggestions, Gujarat DGP Shivanand Jha on Tuesday asked senior police officials to arrange fitness camps and knowledge enhancement workshops for all staff members of the force.

The directive covers all staffers of the Gujarat police - right from the DGP down to constable level - Jha said in a release here.

Jha said the PM, speaking at the DGP Conference at Kevadiya in Gujarat in December last year, had stressed on making police personnel, be it an officer or a junior policeman, physical fit and up-to-date about various laws and subject matters related to their work.

As suggested by the PM, Jha issued a notification on Tuesday, asking heads of various police units such as district SPs and commissioners to prepare a detailed training calendar about workshops to be organised from August 15, said the release.

In such workshops, police personnel will be given training on various laws and other related subjects like investigation, traffic management, technology, community policing, border security and anti-terror operations, it said.

Such workshops will be organised every month at respective police headquarters of each district or city.

The DGP also asked respective heads of police to organise fitness camps for the staff in consultation with fitness experts, doctors and nutritionists.

Special fitness camps should be organised for policemen suffering from obesity. Senior officials are also instructed to ensure that 'body mass index' of each policeman is balanced, said the release.

To encourage personnel to remain fit, the DGP asked officials to pick one policeman having good fitness every week and declare him as 'police role model of the week', said the release.
