Addressing teachers and parents via video conference upon commencement of the drive, Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said schools were like temples, and it was the responsibility of society to make sure that every child went to school.
"The step being taken today in the form of these initiatives will result in a fully literate Gujarat fifteen years from now," he said.
State government officials will cover all the 32,772 government-run primary schools in 18,000-odd villages in the state during the drive.
Modi said that the state government gave insurance cover to children under Vidhyadeep scheme and also took care of their health check-ups and treatment.
Several government officials had adopted anganwadis and that showed the commitment for spreading education, he said.
Modi today visited remote forested areas of Sabarkantha district, covering schools and anganwadis (nurseries) at Mautanda in Bhiloda taluka and at Dantod village in Vijaynagar taluka.
