Ruling BJP, which appeared all set to retain power for the fourth time in a row, is leading in another 65 seats.
Congress has won in 27 seats and is leading in 32.
In major blow for the Congress, its state unit chief Arjun Modhwadia lost the Porbandar seat to Babu Bokhiria of BJP by 17,146 votes, while Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil was defeated by Minister of State for fisheries Purushottam Solanki of the saffron party by 18,554 votes in Bhavnagar rural constituency.
Both were strong contenders for chief ministership in the event of Congress coming to power.
Once BJP satrap before Narendra Modi exploded on Gujarat's political landscape, Shankarsinh Vaghela of the Congress, however, managed to win Kapadvanj seat defeating Kanubhai Dabhi of BJP by a margin of 6597 votes. Vaghela, a five-time MP, is a former Chief Minister and Union Minister.
Gujarat Parivartan Party president Keshubhai Patel scored a facile victory in Visavadar in Saurashtra defeating BJP's Kanubhai Bhalala by over 42,000 votes.

However, his outfit, formed months ahead of the elections, failed to put up a challenge to Modi and BJP even in the Saurashtra-Kutch belt where his Leuva Patel community holds sway.
Rebel BJP MLA Kanu Kalsaria, who formed his Sadbhavna Manch before the elections, bit the dust, finishing third in Gariadhar securing little over 10,000 votes. BJP's Keshubhai Nakarai won the seat by 16,028 votes defeating Babubhai Mangukia of the Congress.
Former Minister of State for Home Amit Shah, Modi's Man Friday and an accused in alleged fake encounters of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati, won Naranpura seat by a margin of over 63,000 votes.
The NCP which fought as alliance partner of Congress has won two seats.
Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) is leading in two seats and JD (U) and independents in one seat each.
