Gulf Air issued a statement saying the flight today diverted to Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport after encountering the turbulence.
The air carrier said "one passenger received medical attention" while the flight was on the ground in India. It did not identify the type of plane involved, though flight-tracking websites identified it as an Airbus A330.
It said flight GF155 left Mumbai tonight after undergoing a safety inspection.
Severe turbulence suddenly can strike planes even in otherwise good weather.
