Gutkha, scented tobacco worth Rs 72 lakh seized; two arrested

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly trying to transport banned gutkha worth lakhs of rupees to Ojhar town in the district.
Acting on a tip-off that thousands of boxes of gutkha and scented tobacco were being transported illegally from Hyderabad to Ojhar, a special squad of the police yesterday laid a trap at Dwarka Circle in the city, Bhadrakali police station Incharge Madhukar Kad said.
Two trucks, carrying gutkha worth about Rs 72 lakh were impounded and the contents seized, he said.
A case has been registered against the truck drivers, identified as Jagannath Mali Alppa (45), resident of Kallur (Karnataka) and Meraj Hussain Sayyad (35), resident of Rajureshwar (Karnataka), he said, adding they have been arrested.
Gutkha, a popular form of chewing tobacco is banned in Maharashtra.
