Police seized gutkha worth Rs 1.77 crore from three trucks near here in Maharashtra and arrested their drivers, an official said Thursday.
The trucks were on their way to Pune from Gujarat when they were intercepted near Charoti check post in Dahanu at around midnight Wednesday by a police team, Palghar police PRO Hemant Katkar stated in an official release.
Personnel of the team, who were patrolling the Mumbai- Ahmedabad highway, grew suspicious about the consignments being transported in the trucks, the release said.
They thoroughly checked the vehicles and found they were carrying gutkha worth Rs 1.77 crore, it said.
Sale, consumption and manufacture of gutkha, a tobacco -based product, is banned in Maharashtra.
The police arrested eight drivers who were in the trucks, which were also seized, the release said.
