West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi today presented the Sunil Gangopadhyay Memorial Award for Excellence in Bengali Literature to eminent litterateur Prafulla Roy for the year 2017 at a function at the Raj Bhavan here today.
The award includes a citation and a cash component of Rs 2 lakh, is for outstanding work and contribution to the Bengali literature.
The award was instituted in 2012 by The Bengal, a Kolkata-based NGO, following the demise of its former president Sunil Gangopadhyay, a Sahitya Akademi Award winner.
"It is matter of great honour to felicitate two more eminent personalities from the world of Bengali literature here today," said Sundeep Bhutoria, Secretary General, The Bengal.
The previous recipients of the Sunil Gangopadhyay Memorial Award included, Nirendranath Chakraborty (2012-13), Sankha Ghosh (2013-14), Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay (2014-15), Joy Goswami (2015-16).
The award was sponsored by Shree Cement Limited.
