Guv kicks off tree census at Raj Bhavan

Aimed at enhancing the green cover in the famous Raj Bhavan here, a census to identify the number of trees along with the respective species has been kick started by Governor Vidyasagar Rao here today.
Raj Bhavan near the Guindy park forest area, on a sprawling 156.14 acre campus, houses many rare and endangered plant species, a release from Raj Bhavan said.
Scientists from the Tamil Nadu University of Agriculture, Coimbatore, recently undertook a survey to study the tree species and identified 264 species of plants including 119 tree species, it said.
"In continuation of this process, a tree census has been organised from November 10 to November 13 to identify and count the number of trees available."
"The census will be conducted by students of Agriculture, Horticulture and scientists from the Agricultural university between November 11 and 13", it said.
Governor as part of inaugurating the census, tagged a teak tree and released a book on trees of Raj Bhavan penned by the scientists of Agricultural University.
Upon completion of the census, all tree species identified would be documented for future reference.
