Guv questions constitutionality of proposed pardon for Pacheco
Press Trust of India Panaji Goa Governor Mridula Sinha has sought clarification on the resolution passed by the state Cabinet seeking pardon for the former minister Fransisco Miccky Pacheco, who is undergoing a sentence for assaulting a government servant.
"The Governor has referred the file back to the government seeking several clarifications. One of the clarifications is whether granting pardon to Pacheco violates the Constitution and also whether it will have impact on the society," a source in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) told PTI today.
The BJP-led government's decision to seek pardon for the former minister -- who belongs to Goa Vikas Party and held rural development portfolio -- had met with severe criticism.
The Supreme Court earlier this year upheld Pacheco's conviction and sentence of six months for slapping a junior government engineer in 2006, after which he surrendered and was sent to jail in June.
