"Protection of Human Rights Act of 1993 provides for the creation of state human rights commission at the state level," he said.
State human rights commission can inquire into violations of human rights related to subjects covered under the state list and concurrent list in the seventh schedule of the Indian Constitution, he said while expressing that every state in the country should have a human rights commission.
Human rights are not just about civil liberties but also includes daily and basic needs like education, public health, food, agriculture, employment and livelihood issue, he said.
He stated that human rights are relevant to everyone and not just to those who face repression or mistreatment. Acharya said that human Rights provided basic rights and freedom and is based on the principle of respect for the individual.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission team, who are in the state for the first time, led by Justice D Murugesan hoped that the NHRC will have a purposeful and meaningful discussion with the stakeholders on the open hearing on various issues relating to atrocities and problems faced by schedule caste and schedule tribes.
