Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit today urged historians of the North eastern region to play a proactive role and act as a bridge between past and present generation.
"Historians of the present day society must take a lead in writing books on the role of freedom fighters and their supreme sacrifices of the sons of the soil so that the present generation could know and study about them," the Governor said while inaugurating the 38th Annual Conference of North East India History Association at Mirza near here.
Regional study should be complementary and not competitive with historians concentrating on researching the history of the region and publishing them, the governor said.
He also asked historians to take initiative in re-writing the history of India by incorporating their findings about North East and its role in history and culture of India, so that the national history becomes comprehensive and complete.
The governor lamented that the people in other parts of the country do not have much knowledge about the uniqueness of the region.
He, therefore, requested historians of the region to take the responsibility to take corrective steps and write books eulogising the role of the freedom fighters of north east along with other great achievers so that the history of this part of the region is read and understood at par with national history of the country.
