A grateful doctor later said he would treat the policemen from the city free for the rest of his life.
Dr Rahul Sapra, a pediatrician, received a phone call on October 18, with the caller demanding Rs one crore and threatening to wipe out his entire family if he did not pay, Superintendent of Police G K Pathak told reporters today.
Police decided to set up a trap for the extortionists and asked Sapra to talk to them about delivery of money.
The accused told Sapra to meet them at the railway crossing near Moti Jheel area today.
When he went to the spot, with a police team watching, three motorcycle-borne youths arrived and snatched the bag containing cash from his hand and rode off.
As the police team led by Additional SP Awdhesh Goswami started a chase, the accused allegedly shot at them and police returned the fire.

Nobody was injured, and police finally managed to catch the three accused, identified as Ramawtar Dhakad, Dashrath Singh Gurjar and Sunil Sharma.
Dhakad had once worked at Dr Sapra's hospital.
Pathak rpt Pathak announced a reward of Rs 15,000 each and a citation for the members of the police team, while Dr Sapra said he would treat the city policemen and their family members free for the rest of his life.
