Half of women convicts at Tihar get remission on I-Day

The convicts, whose sentence has been reduced, include those who have served less than a year to more than five years of their of their sentence.

Vimla Mehra, Director General, Tihar Prisons said, "Remission has been granted to 750 convicts lodged in the jails. Of these 50 are female convicts. This has been granted to those who have maintained good conduct in the prison and have done special work.

"Many things are considered before granting convicts such remissions and the most important of them is that the inmate should have had good conduct during his stay in the past one year here."

Sunil Gupta, spokesperson of Tihar Prisons said, "This has been granted by DG Prisons under the Remission rules of Delhi Jail Manual. 50 of the 100 female convict lodged here have been granted remission.

"As per the remitted sentences, convicts who have served a sentence of more than five years have been granted remission of 45 days, those who have served for a period of one to five years have been granted a remission of one month," he said.

Those inmates who have served below one year have been granted 15 days remission, he said.

A total of 12,000 inmates are lodged in all the nine jails of Tihar Prisons. 25 per cent of this population are convicts.

Gupta said that the DG has also decided to introduce vocational courses like stenography and foreign language for female inmates so that all get employed when released.

"Priority is to bring transparency in prison functioning and promote honesty and hard work. She (DG) has also made it clear that whosoever creates indiscipline will be dealt with formally under the rules," he said.
