Additional Chief Secretary, Transport, Raminder Jakhu said here today that these vehicles were challaned under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1998 for plying without valid permits between the month of April and June.
He said that 432 vehicles were seized or detained during the same period.
Jakhu said in a number of cases, vehicles, including goods vehicles, were being used by the owners for carrying passengers without obtaining the permits from the transport authorities or in violation of the conditions of the permit.
He said that the instances of using goods vehicles to carry passengers had also been observed.
Jakhu said that such vehicles were generally driven at "excessive" speed and were "poorly" maintained.
Besides, they also evade payment of taxes to the government. Special checking campaign would continue in future to curb such unauthorised use of vehicles, the chief secretary added.
