The Uttar Pradesh government today alleged that farmers in Haryana were stealing water from Agra canal and despite several letters to the state authorities the "menace is unchecked".
"Yes, water theft is reported from Agra canal in Haryana. Over 60 kms of the canal passes from Haryana and we have written 53 letters in this regard to officers concerned in Haryana but no action has been taken.
"They are using six to 18 inch pipes for taking water from the canal," state irrigation minister Surendra Patel said while replying to a question in the state Assembly.
He said that due to "non-cooperation" from Haryana the menace could not be checked in their territory.
Patel also said that Rajasthan was also taking more water from the canal than its allocated quota.
The matter was raised by BSP member Dharmpal Singh during the Question Hour.
