Haryana govt announces Road Safety Policy

Haryana government today announced its Road Safety Policy with an aim to achieve 50 per cent reduction in fatalities and injuries by the year 2025.
In Haryana, about 11,000 road accidents take place every year claiming about 4000 people, an official release said here.
The other objectives of the policy is to increase awareness about road safety, establish road safety information database and enhance safer road infrastructure.
The policy also aims to ensure the safety of vulnerable road users, lay emphasis on road traffic safety education and training and strict enforcement of traffic laws.
The government will encourage research in road safety by identifying priority areas, funding research in those areas adequately and establishing Centres of Excellence in academic institutions, the release said.

As part of the policy, the Transport Department will create a State Road Safety Fund with the objective of strengthening and effectively implementing road safety measures.

The government will also establish a Steering Committee on Road Safety, headed by the Chief Secretary, for promoting road safety and to monitor effective implementation of the policy.
Under this policy, a state-level Road Safety Information System will be established to assist all stakeholders in accessing information related to road safety as well as monitoring all road safety related measures.
The system will prepare a data base of all registrations, driving licenses and permits to keep a track of traffic violators and help identify accident-prone points as well as provide online information about trauma centres and hospitals in the area to accident victims.
