Haryana minister orders probe into woman hockey player's death

Haryana minister Kavita Jain today directed Superintendent of Police (Railways) to conduct a probe into the death of national-level woman hockey player Jyoti Gupta.
The state women and child development minister today visited the residence of Jyoti's father Pramod Gupta, in Sonepat and expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Jyoti (20), who hailed from Vijay Nagar in Sonepat, was found dead on the railway tracks in Rewari on Wednesday evening.
Recalling her meetings with Jyoti during various sports events, Jain said that her demise was an irreparable loss for the entire state.
She assured the family that all possible assistance would be extended to the family so that Jyoti's siblings can continue their studies.
At the family's request, Jain directed Superintendent of Police (Railways), Kamal Deep Goyal, to conduct a probe into the matter.
The driver of the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express had reported that a young woman suddenly appeared before the train when it was crossing an over bridge near the Rewari station. She was run over by the train despite brakes being pulled by the driver, a GRP official had said.
On being informed about the incident, the GRP rushed to the spot where the hockey player's body was found.
