DGP Ranjiv Singh Dalal inaugurated the helpline -- 1091 -- which will be controlled exclusively by women personnel, at a function in Moginand, Panchkula, near here.
"This helpline would be instrumental in empowering women in the state at all times and would help secure an immediate response from the police whenever the need arises. It would also put pressure on notorious elements," he said.
The DGP said specially deputed staff would receive calls and inform the nearest police station or police post or PCR van to immediately respond to the caller.
With this helpline, Haryana has now joined neighbouring Delhi and Chandigarh in extending this facility to its citizens, Dalal said.
The decision to launch this service was taken recently in a high-level meeting presided over by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda to instill confidence and sense of security amongst women in the state, the DGP said.
He said the state government had appointed K Selvaraj, Additional Director General of Police, Crime Against Women (CAW) exclusively for reviewing and monitoring the action taken by local police for crime against women in the state.
